Brief History of Foursquare Gospel Church, Festac District

The Festac District Foursquare Gospel
Church was started from a Home Cell in one beloved Sister’s flat in 1978 when
she relocated from Akinwunmi Street in Yaba, Lagos to Festac after the Festac 77 program. [1]

This church which now wears a triple crown of a local church, Zonal headquarters and the District Headquarters Church, has a humble beginning as a LIFE CENTRE. New inhabitants of the new town-FESTIVAL town who moved in after the curtain was drawn on celebrations of the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77), had amon gthem Foursquare members from Yaba, Surulere, Ikeja Churches. They all fellowship together in a Life Centre started at the residence of and coordinated by Sister Nike Olalekan (now a Senior Minister) Pastoring a church in New Jersey, USA

It later metamorphosed into a preaching
point under the pioneer of Yaba church, under the able leadership of Rev. J. A. Boyejo, who sent Pastor and Mrs. Oshugbohun (Now Rev. / Rev. Mrs.  Oluwagbohun) to pioneer the work. It took off in the premises of 3rd Avenue Primary School in March 1978.

The young church was chartered in 1980
while still worshipping in the primary school, with the pioneering council members as:

(1). Pastor S. O. Oluwagbohun – Chairman

(2). Brother F. O. Olasunkanmi – Secretary

(3). Brother T. O. Mobolade – Treasurer

(4). Brother S. O. Otitoju – Choirmaster

(5). Brother S. Ola – Member

The church was later sent packing alongside other tenant churches from the school premises. This led them to worship in the open space under canopies beside a brother’s house, and their instruments and mid-week meetings also housed by individuals’ houses.

It was in this tortuous wilderness experience that the church earned its indecorous appellation of a “mobile church”. They later found an accommodation in one of the Festac 77 purpose built FHA Restaurant at 311 Road. Meanwhile all efforts to get an allocation of a landed property from FHA were in vain. In 1984, being forced out of the Restaurant again, the church moved to a continuing Education centre by 1st
Avenue, near the 1st and 2nd Avenue Junction.

By 1985, the church purchased a 51/2plots of a marshy land near Domorose Hotel, Casco Street, Agboju. By 1989 when she received a marching order from the continuing education centre, because the land (continuing education centre) was sold off by FHA, the church had to hurriedly develop the land at Agboju which housed the worshippers, and earned the place Festac-Annex. All these happened under the Pastoral Leadership of Rev. Oluwagbohun assisted by Pastor Akinyele.

Despite these trademarks of unpleasant
accommodation experiences, the church continue to grow, though painfully loosing members at every turn of shifting to another place. She also gave birth to many daughter churches under this experience like Sabo Oniba, Ijegun Egba, Ilemba Awori, Ishashi etc. which also are mothers of churches today.

In 1994, it became the Festac District Headquarters Church. In 2001 following the chartering of Agboju Church, it became also a Zonal Headquarters.

ALLOCATION OF LAND/BUILDING

By 1988 to the glory of God Festac Headquarter Church was allocated a land at the Festac Phase II which development commenced under Rev. Oluwagbohun and in 1996 continued under Rev. W. A. Badejo who became the District Overseer when there was a swap of Festac and Agege District Overseers in 1997. Rev R.O. Oloidi later took over as District Overseer in 1999 after Rev Badejo was elected as General Overseer. God used Rev Oloidi to continue and eventually perfect the project of the District Headquarters’ Church on 42 Road, Cavera Estate, Festac Phase 11. The church building was completed and dedicated on August 17, 2002.
